Abstract

Hog marketings since last July have been substantially ahead of the figures for a year earlier. There are two reasons: The 7-percent larger 1951 spring pig crop and the decision of farmers to cut back the number of gilts saved for 1952 spring farrowing. The net result was about a 10-percent boost in number of hogs available for slaughter. That was what depressed the hog market during December and January.
